Shipments were not suspended

Argentina: Fruit fly detected in lemons destined to the US

After fruit flies were detected in Tucuman lemons for export to the United States, the Governor of Tucuman, Juan Manzur, and the Minister of productive development, Juan Luis Fernandez, denied there was a suspension in shipments and said controls had been reinforced.

"Senasa, in its exhaustive controls, has detected the fruit fly in a shipment, an inconvenience that is easily solved. All the team of the Ministry of Productive Development and of the agency are working on this with the help of the producers from Tucuman," Manzur said at an official press conference.

He also stated that they would continue to supply the North American market, and that they would continue to comply with quality regulations. In parallel, the Ministry of Agro-industry implemented dismissals in the Health Organization that triggered strikes by the ATE staff.

"Increasing controls and performing a very thorough examination to all loads coming from Tucuman is good. These tests are part of the great effort and care with which we export our fruit. This small inconvenience will be resolved soon and we will continue doing our job," he said.

In turn, Fernandez said: "Tucuman doesn't have a refrigerated container storage center, so we have to work at the rate that the shipping companies send the refrigerated containers, which is a limitation." He then added that some Companies were going to start using the airport structures designed for the export of blueberries.
