Season moving into its peak
Chinese tourism boosts air-shipments of fresh Thai mangoes
Thai Farm Fresh specialises in mango exports to, among other destinations, Mainland China. "For mangoes, this is the top period for us. Weather conditions this season were a little worrisome, for example, some fruits such as durian, will have less production because blossoms got hit by severe rain in the past months," comments Natheethong, co-founder of Thai Farm Fresh.
"Durian is the most popular Thai fruit exported to China. Popular durian varieties are Mongthong, Kanyao, PoungManee and Chanee. Another highly sought after product is the Nam Hom coconuts, also known as the Young Aromatic Coconut variety. Finally, there are two well known mango varieties; both belong to the Nam Doc Mai Mango parent variety and are called Golden Honey and Number 4."
"We supply mangoes all year around. However, peak months are between February and June. The weeks and May and June we consider our absolute peak times."
"The Golden Honey mango is known for its sweetness, yellow colour and longer shelf-life. This mango can be stored for 7 to 10 days when ripe. The Number 4 as a more green to yellow colour and is even sweeter! Its shelf life is a little shorter, around 5 to 7 days when ripe."
"Mangoes are grown across Thailand, wherever soil and climate conditions are suitable. Importantly, the weather is not too cold and the main production areas are based in the North, North-East and in the Middle of Thailand."
"All Nam Doc Mai mangoes are shipped by air, because of the delicate nature of their skin. We supply Shanghai in China, South Korea, Russia, Canada and the EU. For each country we have implemented different treatments methods before export to comply with the relevant country's import regulations."
China
"Overal mango prices have been stable and I expect prices to remain like this. The importance of the Chinese market to us keeps growing. Chinese tourists who visit Thailand will remember its sweetness, and that is not comparable to any other mango variety."
