China: Arrival of Shandong garlic scapes on the market causes price to fall

Data from the Heze City Price Bureau in Shandong shows that the average price of garlic shoots was 0.58 yuan [0.09 USD] per 0.5 kg on May 3rd. That is a price decrease of 51.67% in comparison with the price of 1.2 yuan [0.19 USD] per 0.5 kg one week earlier. It is also a price decrease of 79.58% in comparison with the price of 2.84 yuan [0.45 USD] per 0.5 kg one month earlier, and a price decrease of 35.56% in comparison with the price of 0.9 yuan [0.14 USD] per 0.5 kg one year earlier.

Large volume of low-priced garlic shoots enters the market

The main reasons for this development are as follows: first, the price has been great for the last few years, so many farmers have expanded the surface area of garlic scape plantations. This has greatly increased the production volume of garlic shoots; second, Shandong garlic scape all enter the market at the same time, which creates a situation where supply exceeds demand. The price varies every day, and garlic shoot traders are unwilling to buy large volumes for fear of losing profit. Garlic scape farmers can not avoid selling at low prices. It is estimated that the price of garlic scapes will remain low for at least another week.
