Chinese mango industry still problematic

Up until 2015 there were about 90 mango producing countries. Geographically speaking, mango plantations begin as far north as south Sichuan in China and go as far south as South America, an area that stretches across 30 degrees of latitude. Asia is the largest mango producing region in this area, with a production volume that accounts for 85% of the global mango production volume. The American continent comes second, with an annual production volume that accounts for 14% of the global production volume.

Large-scale mango production in China began in the 1960's, first in Hainan, and then followed by Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Yunnan, and Sichuan. However, there are still many problems in the main mango production areas in China:

Little variety
The harvest time in each production area is short and mangoes enter the market in large volumes in a short period of time, which leads to intense competition and lower prices.

Little management after harvest
Most mangoes are sold fresh. The industry is still waiting for technological innovation in the commercialization of mangoes.

Insufficient standardization
Market standards have not been established, and a unified system of standardized production is still far away. Also, the distribution of relevant market information is not smooth. Insufficient information is not beneficial to market development. And lastly, the infrastructure is weak: fruit farmers do not invest enough in mango orchards, new technology, or the promotion of new products.
