Producers and supermarkets save on costs

France: “Fruit and vegetables for those who lack access”

Ceeclic is a French platform, supporting large retailers in the revaluation of unsold products, by donating to food aid associations. Abdeladil Tebibel, co-founder of Ceeclic, says: "A month ago we entered the market of fruit and vegetable producers, because they too have a lot of consumable, yet unsellable products, due to size problems or overproduction."

“Currently, we’re working with an producer of apples, pears and pumpkins to observe how this cooperation will go. If all goes well, he will introduce us to his cooperative. So far, the cooperation is successful: since we started working with him, we have donated almost five tons of fruits and vegetables to the association Restos du Cœur (Restaurants of Love). We will try to reach a target of 10 - 15 tons by June. The Restos du Cœur are very happy with the products they get to retrieve, and we have already been contacted by another association as well."

"Fruits and vegetables are healthy, yet relatively expensive products; people who are in need do not always have the opportunity to eat fresh or organic fruits and vegetables, while all producers are left with unsellable products. For professionals, it's a very interesting market: they enjoy considerable benefits, such as a tax deductions, and less waste to process. In addition, today's consumers are very vigilant about corporate social responsibility; if a producer or distributor participates in social actions, there is more interest in buying from him. I consider this a very good dynamic."

For now, Ceeclic is a French company, but it is open to international development. Ceeclic makes it easy to commit: "Donors don’t even have to lift a finger. We put them in touch with the associations, we plan the exchange and we deal with the tax part, which allows for us to do the tax deductions.”

"The system remains positive if we remain vigilant. Sometimes we are alerted by associations that stores give products which are no longer consumable, simply to get more tax benefits. Sometimes it's a mistake, but not always; this is a rather complex situation to manage, but overall, everything is going really well; especially with the producers. They give very consumable and fresh products.”

Another challenge is that associations aren’t always adequately equipped: “Sometimes, the stores have prepared the products, and the association does not come, because they don’t have a vehicle to pick them up. In those cases we intervene, and strive to find another association so that the products aren’t wasted.”
