Peru fails to exploit potential of its fruit & veg in US, Europe, and Asia

According to Gabriel Amaro, executive director of the Association of Agricultural Producers' Guilds of Peru - AGAP, Peru has earned a place among the most important food exporters in the world in recent years.

However, he said, the country has countless commercial opportunities and still has a long way to go before considering that it has established itself as an important player in the world market. Then, he presented data that revealed the magnitude of work that still needs to be done.

For example, he stressed that Peruvian exports of fresh fruits and vegetables to Europe amounted to US $ 1.141 billion during 2017, while the European bloc's total purchases of these products had amounted to US $70 billion in that period.

Meanwhile, the country's sales of these products to North America last year amounted to US $ 1.1 billion, when that region made total purchases of US $ 30 billion.

The other big market is Asia. According to Amaro, in 2017 Peru managed to sell the Asian market fruits and vegetables for US $ 300 million, while their total purchases reached US $ 41 billion.

The AGAP spokesperson also said that Peru should develop a strategy to diversify its portfolio with other value products such as nuts, pecans, and dates. "Peru is already starting to get involved in this market and Chile and Argentina are afraid of us," he said.

He said the country should take advantage of the natural characteristics of its territory, such as its ecological soils, and of its traceability and agricultural health, which is demanded by the export and domestic markets.
