Peru expects to end the mango season with 200,000 tons of exports

According to the general manager of the Association of Producers and Exporters of Peruvian Mango (APEM), Juan Carlos Rivera Ortega, Peruvian fresh mango exports in the 2017/2018 season could reach 200 thousand tons, which would represent an 11.73% increase over the 179 thousand tons dispatched in the previous season (2016/2017).

Rivera Ortega also said the volume shipped in the current campaign (2017/2018), which will end in two weeks, will set a new record in mango exports.

He also said that Peru had already exported 190 thousand tons of mango (8,500 containers) by the end week 13 in this campaign (April 1), and that they expected to export 400 containers in the next two weeks, which means they would have exported 8,900 containers (204,700 tons) in this campaign. Each container stores 23 tons.

Rivera also said that the offer from Piura and Casma (Ancash) was still coming out, although to a lesser extent. The 2017/2018 campaign started late so the end of the campaign will also be delayed.

Regarding destination markets, Rivera said Europe accounted for 66% of Peruvian mango exports (in the previous campaign it accounted for 60%), while the United States acquired 30% (in the 2016/2017 campaign it had purchased 34%). The rest was sent to the New Zealand, Canada, Chile, China, Japan, and South Korea.

Europe's greater participation would be due to the adverse weather registered in the east coast of the United States in December of 2017, which caused Peruvian mango shipments to be redirected towards the Old Continent. 

In addition, Europe's participation has increased thanks to a good marketing management of the fruit, as Europe has adopted the ripening technique at destination (in ripening chambers). "This means we can offer the European consumer ready to eat mangoes."
