Mexican avocado exports to China increased by 6% in 2017

Avocados appeared on the plates of more Chinese people last year. This demand for avocados encouraged the growth of Chinese import of avocados from Mexico. Data from the Mexican Ministry of Economic Affairs shows that Mexico exported 8.75 million kg of avocados to China in 2017. Their export value was 255.47 million USD. This was an increase of 6% in comparison with 2016. China has become Mexico's eighth largest avocado export destination.

Mexican avocado

Mexican avocado production accounts for roughly a third of the global avocado production volume. Ten years ago in China, hardly anyone who knew what an avocado was. China only exported two tons of avocados in 2010. Six years later, avocado imports reached a volume of 321 thousand tons. More and more people pay attention to healthy diet and lifestyle, and avocados meet with all the requirements.

Chinese view avocados as high-end fruit. Avocados first appeared in restaurants and salad bars that tried to construct a high-end, healthy image. However, when custom tariffs were lowered, market supply became abundant, the price fell and, as more people pursued a healthy lifestyle, avocados began to appear in the shopping basket of more and more Chinese consumers.

The world is facing a possible trade war. Countries such as Mexico, Peru, and Chile are scrambling to obtain avocado orders from China. At the same time, China is developing avocado plantations in Guangxi to satisfy the growing domestic demand for avocados.
