Grape, mango, blueberry, and asparagus exports stand out

Peru: Agricultural exports increased by 23.9%

In the first two months of the year, Peruvian agricultural exports (including traditional and non-traditional products) amounted to US $1,070,973,000, i.e. 23.9% more than in the same period of 2017 (US $ 863,894,000), mainly because of the growth of certain products, such as grapes, mango and blueberries. "This is the first time that we surpassed US $ 1 billion in the first two months of the year in the last five years," said the manager of Agricultural exports of the Association of Exporters (ADEX), Paula Carrion.



These products reached 38 destinations, Germany (with US $ 14,306,000), the US (with US $12,161,000), Belgium, Colombia, and the United Kingdom, accounted for 61.8% of the total. Exports to Uruguay, Canada, China, Sweden, and Japan also stood out. Exports to Norway, New Zealand, and Israel recovered; Finland, Poland, and Singapore were new destinations.

Exports of agro-industrial products amounted to US $989,328,000, i.e 27% more than in the same period of 2017. The most outstanding products were the grape (which was shipped to the US, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and China), mango, asparagus, and blueberries. Peruvian blueberry shipments to the US, the Netherlands, China, Thailand, and Malaysia showed three-digit growth.

"Having a legal framework that is stable over time (Agrarian Promotion Law No. 27360) is not enough to guarantee the sustainable growth of agricultural exports. Public sector authorities and producer associations need to work together so that we can strengthen the entire agricultural export chain and incorporate products from the mountains and the jungle," Carrion said.



The sector also needs to promote Good Agricultural Practices, innovate in products, packages and crating, improve water infrastructure, access roads, and reduce logistics overruns, as well as identify new markets through business missions and participating in fairs such as Thaifex (Thailand) , SFH Food & Hotel Seoul (South Korea), APAS Show (Brazil), Salon de Gourmets (Spain), and Sial (China), among others.

Carrion Tello said that the most important markets for the agroindustrial offer were the United States (with US $368,843,000) and the Netherlands (US $ 164,779,000), which accounted for 53.9% of exports. They were followed by Spain, Ecuador, Hong Kong, China, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, among others.
