Cuba: Potato harvest begins in Ciego de Avila

Ciego de Avila's potato harvest has begun in the fields of the El Mambi Base Business Unit and the Paquito González Agricultural Production Cooperative.

Orlando Perez Pedreira, delegate of Agriculture in the province, said the first volumes of this harvest would be distributed to the population of the municipalities most affected by Hurricane Irma.

According to specialists, the phytosanitary state of the plantations with national and imported seeds is favorable thanks to the guaranteed irrigation and fertilizers that the six state units and cooperatives linked to that crop have.

Considered to be one of the largest producers of potatoes in the country, Ciego de Avila planted more than 850 hectares of this food this season. This product, which is rich in vitamins and carbohydrates, will reach consumers in several provinces.
