Italy: Marisol strawberries could provide a great opportunity for producers

The Marisol strawberry variety has confirmed expectations and revealed its high productive capabilities and organoleptic level in central-southern Italy crops.

"Things were improved by the fact that plants were very uniform with ripening and growing fruits as well as flowers, meaning the campaign would be highly productive. As can be seen from the photos taken in Metaponto and Calabria, the quality of the fruit is rather high," explain Mario and Marco Magnani from Mia Sas.

Marisol produces large quantities of high-quality fruit. Strawberries have a bright red colour with a high Brix level, excellent flavour and long shelf-life throughout the entire production cycle, which lasts beyond the end of May.

It's a rustic variety that tolerates tired soil very well and does not need a lot of pesticides and fertilisers. This in turn means producers know they will save some money. In addition, it also means the variety has a low environmental impact.

Marisol is already available in many countries. In Italy and Morocco in particular, the Viveros California S.L. production managed to acquire a considerable share of the market in just two years. Over 14 million plants have been sold in total despite last season's weather.

"This year, provided that the weather is better than in 2017, Marisol will be at its best, so we are expecting a considerable increase in sales."

"The distribution sector is also realising that the organoleptic qualities of this variety need to be promoted. It has already become a typical product in some areas with prices above average."
