Spain: Arrests for the forgery of agricultural documents

The Guardia Civil has dismantled an organization involved in the forgery of agricultural documents for the sale of citrus in a macro-operation carried out in the provinces of Alicante and Valencia, and which has resulted in the arrest of 23 people, with another 22 under investigation.

The operation has led to the finding of 400 forged accompanying traceability documents (DATA), with which more than 424 tonnes of oranges of unknown origin were sold. This fruit would allegedly have been supplied by thieves, according to a statement from the Guardia Civil.

With the sale of these goods, a net profit of over 51,000 Euro would have been obtained, according to the same sources, who explained that the forged documents gave those fruits a legal origin, allowing them to be introduced in the legal market.

The investigation started last September, when more than 4,000 DATA documents delivered to different warehouses were analysed; documents which were handed out as part of thousands of transactions involving the sale of oranges in the past year.

Presumably, those now under arrest filled the DATA with the real personal data of owners of farms and land. In fact, in many of the cases, even the signature of the legal owner was forged, all without the consent of the parties affected.
