Marcel Biemans, CLTV Zundert:

"Situation on strawberry market opposite of last year"

There has been doom and gloom on the strawberry market in recent weeks. "Prices have since slowly been recovering, which is badly needed after this dismal period", says Marcel Biemans of CLTV Zundert, who sell their strawberries via the Belgian Hoogstraten Cooperative. "The situation is the opposite of last year. Then, in the same period, there were hardly any strawberries available and they were quite pricey."

"This year, in November and early December we have had a lot more strawberries available. Sometimes we even have 20 or 30 tonnes additional supply at Hoogstraten. In addition, the availability from countries such as Egypt, Morocco and Spain has also begun earlier. Strawberries also do not sell well at this time of year", continues Marcel.

"Fortunately, prices have slowly been recovering this week. This will, hopefully, continue. Prices for strawberries cultivated under grow lights, though not great, are at a more acceptable level again. Most of the crops are now nearing their end. Some growers have also stopped their greenhouse cultivation of the Elsanta in preparation for the spring season."
