Italy: Comercial Gallo makes an assessment on new cultivars

Comercial Gallo is convinced that investing in innovation is the only way to make good profits. The company has been introducing new varieties to the market since 2002.

"Producers have made considerable incomes with all kinds of sales, if confronted with the Italian citrus fruit standard. We are referring in particular to those who chose to implement Clemenrubi, Orogros and Loretina productions, which are prestigious in terms of both seasonality and grade."

Comercial Gallo has always searched for citrus varieties to introduce to the Italian production system to fill seasonal gaps. "We managed to cover the early production period with the tree varieties mentioned above. Three years ago, we introduced the Tango variety, late seedless clementines with no pollination interference. This year, we will have the first fruits from the first plants. We should start harvesting in February."

"Tango really surprised us in terms of productivity also from plants that were just few months/years old. In addition, grades and skin (smooth and thin) were excellent."

"We reached an agreement to introduce the first early patented persimmon variety, Maxim. It is non-astringent, sweet, firm, seedless, it doesn't pollinate and, most of all, it needs no post-harvesting treatment."
