Greek fruit and veg exports expected to fall in 2017

According to estimates from Incofruit Hellas, by the end of 2017, Greek fresh fruit and vegetable exports will be lower than in 2016 and reach 1.45 million tonnes, compared to 1.64 million tonnes a year earlier. In any case, kiwi exports will reach a new record, with 130,000-140,000 tonnes.

Based on ELSTAT data, in the first nine months of 2017, fresh fruit and vegetable exports have fallen by 17.1% in terms of volume compared to the same period of 2016 and amounted to 1.074.381 tonnes. Meanwhile, their value has dropped by 10.9%, down to 709.163 million Euro. According to CYSTAT data, what is most noteworthy is the record export of peaches, apricots and nectarines.

The export of summer fruits and vegetables up to 30 September 2017 is marked by the 10-year record achieved by peaches, with a 16.45% growth in terms of volume, and by the increases recorded by apricots (+54.45%), nectarines (+3.16%), cherries (+4.8%), table grapes (+12.63%), strawberries (+11.12%) and potatoes (+47.5%).

Also, in the first nine months of 2017, imports of fruit and vegetables have amounted to 480,325 tonnes (+18.6%) worth 402,507,670 Euro (+7.1%). Lemon imports have increased by 47.8%, and there are also increases in the case of kiwis (+62.5%), potatoes (+35.4%), pineapples (+19.3%), pears (+15.6%), pomegranates (+15.6%) and dates (+14.7%).
