The market for mushrooms is currently still fairly stable, but traders are already preparing for the Christmas rush. “Everyone is getting a bit nervous about what will happen in coming weeks, but for now it’s still the calm before the storm,” says Alexander van der Linden of wholesaler Verhoeckx from Kerkdriel, the Netherlands. “Supply is fairly good. Prices aren’t bad, but not crazy yet either. Plenty of trade is still available. The prices for mid-sized product is around 1.50 euro, but it will undoubtedly improve next week. We always see the biggest rush in the week before Christmas. Sales have more than doubled in that week.”
“The final three days before Christmas in particular are very busy. Norway is now an important export market for us, so demand from there starts a bit earlier due to the transportation time. That results in a nice spreading of demand for us. When we have a rush in demand from here, peak demand from Norway will already have stopped again,” Alexander says. There’s always special demand for wild mushrooms in December. “These are eaten more in the Christmas month, and are already quite pricey. Wild mushroom prices often increase by a third around this time.”
