Medflies discovered in Half Moon Bay, California

California farmers are having to deal with a new pest after Mediterranean fruit flies were found in Half Moon Bay. Agricultural Commissioner Fred Crowder said early detection is crucial in limiting the impact of the pest which threatens the state's avocado, apple, orange and many other crops, the Half Moon Bay Review reports. Growers and traders are concerned that, if left unresolved, it could lead to quarantine areas being implemented which would restrict agricultural exports from the state.
