Peruvian blueberry exports are expected to grow by more than 12% in the next four years because of a greater demand in its main markets and because of an increase in yields and hectares planted, stated the Chamber of Commerce of Lima (CCL).
"Our main markets, such as the United States, Hong Kong, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the European Union will definitely demand more of this product in the coming years," stated Carlos Posada, the executive director of Idexcam-CCL.
"The international markets know Peruvian blueberries are healthy and our producers, who already have enough production to face an increase in demand, will take advantage of this," he added.
He also said that, despite being one of the most complicated destinations due to its phytosanitary requirements, the main destination market for this product was the United States, which accounted for 54% of Peruvian blueberry exports in 2016.
"Peru exports the most blueberries in September, October, November and December. In addition, the average price per kilogram is higher during these months," Posada said.
In the last two years, exports of this fruit have registered high levels of growth. "In 2014, shipments of blueberries totalled only 30 million dollars, but in 2016 the value exported amounted to 242 million, which represents an average annual growth of 186%," he said.
