Deciduous tree fruit, nuts, and grapes:
Table grape harvest is nearing completion, and grapes are being exported to China, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Trinidad & Tobago, and Vietnam.
Plums are being shipped to Bangladesh, Canada, and Mexico.
Kiwifruit are being exported to Colombia. Persimmons are being harvested and sold domestically. Pomegranates are being exported to Australia, Costa Rica, Korea, New Zealand, and Taiwan.
Pecans are being harvested, with the first exports going to New Zealand.
Pistachio nuts are being exported to Australia, Bosnia Herzegovina, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
Walnuts continue to be harvested and exported to the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. Almonds are being exported to Colombia, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
Pruning continues in some stone fruit orchards. Some older, poorly producing orchards and vineyards are being removed and prepared for replanting.
Citrus, avocados, and olives:
The navel orange harvest is ongoing, with some early varieties being exported to Australia, Korea, Mexico, and Thailand. Maturity continues to be good, with tests above minimum requirements. Pomelos are being harvested and sold domestically as well as exported to Australia and Spain. Melogold hybrid grapefruit are being exported to Korea. Tangerines are being packed and sold on the domestic market. Finger limes are being exported to France and the Netherlands.
Vegetables, melons an berries:
Fall vegetables are being harvested. Acorn and Spaghetti squash, turnips, beets, yams, kale, cauliflower, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, and Snow peas are just some of the choices available now at the local Farmer’s Markets. Strawberries continue to grow at roadside stands.
Small grains and other field crops:
Cotton is still being harvested. Fields are being shredded and disked to comply with Cotton Plowdown Regulations. All fields must be brought into compliance prior to Dec. 20. Black-eyed beans are being exported to Malaysia.
Most summer crops have been harvested, and fields are being worked and having fertiliser spread for winter planting. Seed is being shipped in and planted to winter forage crops such as wheat, barley, and other cereal grain and forage mixes.
Livestock and poultry:
Rangeland forage conditions are fair to poor. Rains should help with germination of rangeland forage. Some supplemental feeding is required. The fed cattle market price continues to rise this week and is at $125.00 per hundred weight.
Additional comments:
Nursery shipments continue to be slow. Wholesale nurseries are shipping small amounts of stock to local and out-of-state retail outlets. Bare-root roses are being received and processed for reshipment out-of-state.
