Italy: Good start to the campaign for Val Venosta apples

Fabio Zanesco, sales manager for VI.P, l'Associazione delle Cooperative Ortofrutticole della Val Venosta is satisfied with the first part of the season: "Almost all varieties are available in the various distribution channels and countries to which we export."

"The Gala campaign is perfectly in line with expectations so we are rather optimistic about both prices and volumes: sales performances are better than last year for every single month from September until now and we should end sales in late February as forecast. Red Delicious started well and quantities are similar to last year: prices are good and weekly volumes are increasing, so we are expecting significant growth before Christmas. The commer-cialisation of new Golden apples started in early November and feedback has been positive with figures reflecting expectations, also in consideration of the low volumes produced in Italy."

"As of next week, all our cooperatives will start working at full capacity, so availability will be good. Due to the summer hail, a significant part of the production will have to be sold as second category under the Amélie brand, for which there is actually a lot of interest considering market prices. Quality is anyway excellent and the hot summer days led to high sugar levels. Even those Golden apples affected by hail will have organileptic qualities comparable to the first category, so we will be able to offer consumers produce that is excellent to eat."

"The sales campaign will be in full swing over the next few weeks, so we need to be able to assess market reactions both in Italy and abroad. Due to the lack of fruit on a European level, in fact, our objective is to achieve regular destocking and channel the produce well avoiding price and volume fluctuations."
