Algeria annual inflation rate at 6%, with cost of fruit prices up 20%

Algeria’s annual inflation rate rose to 6 percent in October from 5.9 percent the previous month, due to higher food prices, official data showed on Sunday.

Struggling with lower oil and gas export prices in recent years, the government has approved import restrictions, causing shortages and higher prices for some products.

On a monthly basis, the consumer price index rose 0.5 percent in October, according to the National Statistics Bureau.

The cost of fruit prices were up 20 percent.

The government expects inflation for the full year to be 5.5 percent, down from 6.4 percent in 2016.
