Spain: Almacenes Rubio signs agreement to supply potatoes to Carrefour

Carrefour's strategic commitment to the Spanish production, which is helping give a boost to local products, has reached La Rioja with the brand Calidad y Origen. The retailer ratified this policy in Logroño with the signing of an agreement with Almacenes Rubio. The agreement has been signed by José Angel Rubio, president of Almacenes Rubio, and Eugenio Morales, director of Socomo, Carrefour's fruit and vegetable purchasing subsidiary, in the presence of José Ignacio Ceniceros, president of the Autonomous Region of La Rioja.

Thanks to this agreement, the frying potatoes harvested by hand and without post-harvest treatments from Almacenes Rubio will be available at all Carrefour stores in Spain.

Almacenes Rubio has been collaborating with Carrefour since 1994. In 1999, it took part for the first time in the Filière project. In 2002, they signed an agreement for the Quality Tradition Carrefour brand. Today this relationship is confirmed with the signing, within the framework of Filiére, of this agreement to supply the frying potato under the Carrefour Quality and Origin brand. Since 2010, Almacenes Rubio has been supplying Carrefour with a potato volume between 8 and 11 million kilos per year.

100% Spanish potatoes
The Carrefour quality and origin frying potato is a 100% Spanish potato; a result of the continuous efforts to improve the product quality. Its production is kept under control and it is harvested at its optimum point of ripeness. It is brushed, not washed, to preserve its natural protection. It is a potato of the Agria variety, with an intense yellow-coloured flesh and a controlled content of dry matter which makes the fried potato chips crispy, golden and bright. It is a regular-shaped potato that retains little oil when fried and is presented in an opaque 3 kilo bag to preserve its properties for longer.

Almacenes Rubio is a family business with 100% Spanish capital that makes around 26 million Euro in turnover, with a production of 96,000 tonnes in 2016. Currently, it manages around 1,800 hectares in Spain through 196 producers, either independent or integrated in the SAT Iniciativas Agrícolas. 45% of its production consists of fresh potatoes, including those supplied to Carrefour for its Quality and Origin brand; another 24% corresponds to washed potatoes, 23% are intended for processing and 8% for seeds.

Almacenes Rubio distributes its potatoes across Spain and exports them to the UK, Ireland, Belgium, France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Dubai, among other countries.

Carrefour considers local agro-food companies as a key element in its business model, as they contribute to supplying a specific and local assortment in each of the chain's establishments. In Spain, Carrefour has 200 hypermarkets, 117 Carrefour Market supermarkets, more than 580 Carrefour Express supermarkets and 143 service stations.
