This coincides with the imminent arrival of the first Clemenules of the season, whose production volume in the Region of Valencia is expected to be around 35% lower than last season.
According to Abel Alarcón, "normally, with the arrival of the Clemenules, which is the most planted clementine in the Region of Valencia, the supply gets out of control and prices plummet, as many cooperatives desperately try to sell their goods. This year we expect a more orderly supply because there is a much lower production and there is no need to reduce prices. This is a year when prices have to be defended, since we also have larger calibres compared to last year."
Brio Fruits also handles clementines with leaf. "At the moment, we are finishing with the Oronules clementines and in ten days we hope to start selling Fina with leaf."
The company, based in Real de Gandía, Valencia, is launching the brand Boliche for its premium quality fruit. "Thanks to the acquisition of new, more accurate automatic machinery for the selection and calibration of citrus fruits we can now offer more categories," says Abel Alarcón.
The Spanish Navelina meets the South African orange
The first Navelina oranges from Valencia have already hit the market with Brix levels reaching 12 degrees, which "has been well received by the market," says Abel Alarcón.
At the moment, there are still oranges from South Africa in the market, and this, according to the manager of this company, will hinder the marketing of the newly arrived Spanish production. "It's fine for European chains to import overseas citrus during the off-season, but I think they should bet on the local production when there is availability."
