Rob de Lijn, Unitrade Holland:

"Dutch Doyenné pears too expensive for Italian market"

At this time of year, the export market for Dutch fruit and vegetables to Italy is, traditionally, quieter. "Full soil vegetables such as iceberg lettuce, green cauliflower, and romaine lettuce are moving a bit now," says Rob de Lijn of Unitrade Holland, which is situated in Poeldijk. According to this exporter, the summer season went well. "The demand was good, without any spectacular developments."

"There was, however, an increase in demand for typical Italian specialties such as radicchio and endive. They do, of course, have a large own production, but in the heat of summer it becomes difficult to grow these products. The Sicilian tomato production also started much later, due to the heat. This means that, now, in November, we still have the opportunity to send Dutch tomatoes to Italy," he says.

Different to other years is the export of Doyenné du Comice pears. There was always a good demand for these in the Italian market. "Italy always has some of its own produce, but they are small sizes. There is usually a good demand for larger sizes between October and February. This year, the Dutch crop was almost halved because of the night frost. The prices are so high that there is almost no demand in the Italian market. The Dutch growers received good prices on the domestic market, and therefore didn't have the need to sell," concludes Rob.
