Week 44 import market review

New season Chilean blueberries started - Malaysian pineapples enter Chinese market

This week, new products have been making their appearance on the import market. Not only did the first box of Malaysian pineapples enter the Chinese market, but the first 2017 Chilean blueberries also arrived in Shanghai by air. Simultaneously, with the upcoming 11-11 shopping festival, imported fruit is becoming very popular amongst consumers, driving up the prices.

Even though this is the first 2017 shipment of Chilean blueberries, compared to last year's first batch, they are not as successful. Because they are not hard enough, and the taste is not as great, the market price is lower than last year's. The XJ variety, for example, was sold for around 240 yuan the first day, but after a few days, the price kept dropping, until it reached 220-210 yuan. This still has not improved the sales speed. Peruvian blueberries have also entered the market by sea, and are priced at 90-120 yuan. High quality blueberries are even sold for 150 yuan. They have quite some competitive strength compared to similar Chilean blueberries.

Apart from the first batch of Chilean blueberries, the import market also welcomed the first shipment of Malaysian pineapples. After these pineapples were added to the list of acceptable fruit in the middle of August, this is the first time that Malaysian pineapples have entered the Chinese market. It involves the 12 kilogram packaging of Super Sweet MD2. Upon arrival, importers held an opening ceremony and pineapple tasting at the Shanghai Huizhan Market. Compared to Costa Rican pineapples, which are also quite new on the market, Malaysian ones are somewhat sweeter, but they also crumble more. The 10# pineapples started to sell at 80 yuan, which is cheaper than pineapples from the Philippines, and about the same as the Costa Rican pineapple price.

Furthermore, as the 11-11 shopping festival is approaching, sellers are starting many different marketing activities, which is influencing the imported fruit market. The avocado market, for example, has been occupied by Chilean avocados. The large quantities on the market have been dragging down the price. Because of the 11-11 shopping festival, 84# (10 kg) and 35# (6.5 kg) avocados have become very popular online. However, as the price is increasing, the sales speed is also improving. The price of the 10 kilogram packaging of 84# avocados, for example, has been fluctuating around 190 yuan, and they are selling well.
