The Fijian government stressed on Monday that it remains steadfast in its efforts to ensure the food security for its people amid the climate change.
Speaking at the opening of a three-day international symposium on tropical fruits which is being held in Fiji's third largest city of Nadi, Fiji's Minister for Agriculture, Inia Seruiratu, said his country has been stressing the importance of developing its own fruit industry in order to reduce the country's fruit import bill.
Organised by the International Tropical Fruits Network (TFNet), the Fijian Ministry of Agriculture and a host of other institutions such as the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations, the symposium aims to encourage concerted efforts to increase productivity while identifying adaptation and mitigation strategies to buffer the impact of climate change on tropical production.
The theme of the symposium, which was attended by fruit experts from around the globe, is "Food Security amidst a changing climate: towards a sustainable and resilient tropical fruit industry."
