Hungary: Fruit and veg consumption grew by 12% in 2016

Hungarian households spent more than 330 billion forints (about 1.07 billion Euro) on vegetables and fruit last year, which is about 12 percent more than in the previous year and just over a tenth of the annual turnover generated by daily consumer goods, as revealed by a survey carried out by GfK Hungária. The survey counted with the participation of 2,000 Hungarian households between 1 January and 31 December of last year.

The survey reveals that households spent 216.8 billion forint (703.26 million Euro) on vegetables, compared to 206.1 billion (668.55 million Euro) a year earlier, and 116.7 billion forints (378.55 million Euro) on fruit, compared to 109.2 billion forint (354.22 million Euro) in 2015.

The volume of fruit purchased by households grew from 349,000 tonnes to 361,000 tonnes (+3%) in 2016 compared with the previous year, while that of vegetables grew to 687,000 tonnes from the 676,000 tonnes of 2015.

An average of 165 kilograms of vegetables and 89 kilograms of fruit were bought in one year.

According to the survey, on average, Hungarian households bought vegetables 94 times a year, while fruit was purchased 50 times. 53 percent of the goods were bought in markets.

According to the study, buyers prefer good value for money and demand quality, freshness and delicious tastes. Most of them believe that the Hungarian origin of a product is more important than its price, especially in the case of fruits and vegetables.

Hungarians mostly consume apples in the case of fruits, while the most popular vegetables are potatoes. Other important products are melons, bananas, tomatoes, peppers and onions.

Mr Zoltán Klucsik, Director of Marketing and Development at the Budapest Wholesale Market, highlighted that the Budapest Wholesale Market annually sells 400-450 thousand tonnes of vegetables and fruits and that 60-62 percent of these are Hungarian products.
