Michoacan prepares for the 2017 Mexico Strawberry Expo

The 2017 Mexico Strawberry Expo will be held in Michoacan from October 26 to 28 of this year and it will include the participation of 10 states of the country and more than 2 thousand strawberry producers and processing entrepreneurs.

Francisco Huergo Maurin, Secretary of Rural Development and Agri-Food (Sedrua) of the Government of Michoacan, stated that in 2015 Mexico had produced 392,625 tons of strawberry, 253,573 tons of which had been produced by Michoacan, i.e. more than 80 per cent of the country's production.

Huergo Maurin said that Michoacan and its people were very proud of the strawberry producers, who for many years have been the leading producers of this fruit at the national level.

Huergo Maurin said this great event would be held at the premises of the Regional Agricultural Union of Strawberry Producers in the city of Zamora, from October 26 to the 28, and that producers would showcase the varied and important range of strawberry processed products.

He also said that the strawberry-producing states such as Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Jalisco, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Morelos, Puebla, Mexico, and San Luis Potosi, among others, would participate in the event.

The event is expected to be attended by more than 2,000 producers and exhibitors, processors, entrepreneurs and fruit traders who will showcase the acquisition of the plant, the development of nurseries, commercial plantation, fresh exports, processing, to the final consumption.

Nearly 1,450 producers of the 90 different areas that make up the productive chain will participate in the 2017 Mexico Strawberry Expo, from suppliers of agricultural products (quilts, smart plastics, plastic nets, etc.); biological control (plant health, pesticides, safety equipment, safety certifications, and agricultural training), among others.

658 technicians, 200 agronomy students, 88 researchers and 225 agroindustries will also participate in the event.

Finally, Huergo Maurin made an extensive invitation to all Michoacans to participate in the event, not only in the marketing of the fruit, but also to learn from speakers from Peru, Spain, Egypt, and China, among other countries.

The state official said they were preparing a cycle of 30 conferences, covering topics such as pest and disease control, trends in the world's berries market, technologies to extend shelf life; potential strawberry markets; and logistical problems to take the product to distant countries; to name but a few.
