Italy: Origine Group exports 30% of its summer pears

This year, Origine Group shipped 30% of its summer pears abroad. A positive result that enabled the consortium to conquer new clients and nations. Despite the weather problems, quality was good and the two main varieties are Carmen and Santa Maria.

"Prices were good, we reached and exceeded the threshold of 30% of produce sold abroad. We are rather optimist, also because summer produce could pave the way for the winter varieties abroad," explains general manager Alessio Orlandi (in the photo).

Exporting is essential for Italian producers so "we commissioned a feasibility study to learn more about the potential and opportunities of the Chinese market. There is still no bilateral agreement, but it will come sooner or later and, when that happens, it will be too late to start collecting information. This is why we have already started."

Over the past few weeks, Origine summer pears were sold in the Far East and even India. "But there are nearer countries we can export to, like for example Spain. It imports Abate pears from Chile, meaning it does not produce a lot of them. In Europe, it mostly imports from Belgium and the Netherlands, which produce around 50% more per hectare than us due to their weather conditions. We need to approach them with Premium ranges that differ from the standard produce, but applies to other markets as well."

The Pera Italia brand will be relaunched during the Madrid fair (18th-20th October) as well as in other missions abroad over the next few months. Origine Group is made up Afe, Apofruit, Frutta C2, GranFrutta Zani, Kiwi Uno, Op Kiwi Sole, Pempa-Corer, Salvi-Unacoa, Spreafico.
