“Plans to set up in every blueberry-producing country”

ABB Trading becomes ABB Growers

As of 1 October, the name ABB Trading will change into ABB Growers. Owner Fred Douven explains this decision was made for multiple reasons. “We noticed that the word ‘Trading’ had a negative connotation for multiple customers. It didn’t do well in trade, because people thought we were only traders, and not growers,” he says.

Fred indicates they cooperate with growers in multiple countries. “In Europe those countries are mostly the Netherlands, Poland, Serbia, Germany and Portugal. Now that we are called ABB Growers, it’s clear to everyone who we are and what we do. We kept ABB. A is for asparagus, BB is for blueberries. These are our most important products.”

Branches in other countries
Fred has big plans for the future. “Blueberries are grown in many countries, and we want to set up branches with ABB Growers in every blueberry-producing country. We started ABB Growers in the Netherlands, and soon we’ll open a branch in Serbia. If everything goes according to plan, more countries will follow in coming years, both in Europe and outside of it.”

He indicates that ABB Growers is unique. “In many companies, one or multiple people make a profit, and growers earn less. At ABB Growers, producers are also shareholders, and that doesn’t often happen yet. Working together in that manner is pleasant for both parties. We don’t force anyone to do anything they don’t want to, we just give advice and sell the products. We think it’s important to keep track of quality and to classify it, and that’s why we focus on multiple production countries. We have one contact for multiple growers.”
