Spain: Reduction of fruit and veg purchases in households

Spanish households purchased 4,297 million kilos of fresh fruit, 2,570 million kilos of fresh vegetables and 977 million kilos of fresh potatoes between July 2016 and June 2017, down 2.2%, 3.9% and 2.3%, respectively, compared to the previous twelve months.

This was revealed in latest Food Consumption Panel published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (Mapama) and which, however, shows an increase in the value of the purchases made.

The highest increase in turnover corresponded to potatoes (759 million Euro, +5.8%), followed by fruit (6,191 million Euro, +1.5%) and vegetables (4,482 million Euro, +0.9%).

The changes in purchases oscillate between the increase recorded by cherries (63.97 million kilos, +57.4%) and the fall of green beans (90.23 million kilos, -15.3%).

In value terms, the highest increase and decrease correspond to cherries (205.89 million Euro, +49.7%) and to apples (613.08 million Euro, -8.0%).

The most purchased fresh fruits during the period at hand were oranges (817.93 million kilos, -8.0%), bananas (523.92 million kilos, +1.4%), apples (451.85 million kilos, -10%), watermelons (396.09 million kilos, +4.7%), melons (371.59 million kilos, +7.9%) and mandarins (253.84 million kilos, -11%).

The most consumed vegetables were tomatoes (607.20 million kilos, -2.3%), onions (320.29 million kilos, -1.8%), peppers (214.49 million kilos, +1.3%), lettuce/endive (169.14 million kilos, -10.4%), green beans (90.23 million kilos, -15.3%) and cabbage (67.26 million kilos, -12.3%).
