Indian governor seeks minimum price for fruit & veg

Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala has suggested that the Centre consider having a minimum price for vegetables and fruits so that farmers’ interests are protected.

While the Centre announces minimum support prices (MSP) for foodgrains and crops such as cotton and jute, the pricing of horticulture produce such as fruits and vegetables is left to the market forces.

Addressing an international symposium on horticulture here on Monday, Vala said that since there is no MSP for fruits and vegetables, growers of horticulture products such as onion, tomato and potato resort to dumping of their produce on the roads when the prices drop.

He also urged horticulture scientists to develop technologies that will help farmers increase their productivity, which in turn could help boost their incomes.
