AU delegate visits India encouraging stronger trade

The relationship between India and Australia has become stronger than ever, said Luke Hartsuyker, Member of Parliament, Australia, during his visit to the city, along with a delegation, on Sunday.

He visited the Koyambedu fruit market and spoke of how the agriculture production of both countries complement each other. “There is a great opportunity for us to provide products at certain times of the year and for your country to do the same,” he said.

Mr. Hartsuyker said India had become one of the fastest growing economies, and in areas such as information technology, the country was regarded highly in Australia. “We are also making a host of changes to ensure the economy continues to grow. We have quite a bit to learn from you,” he added.

E. Duraiswamy, director of EDS Agro India Private Limited, said that over the years, there has been a drastic increase in the sale of Australian apples here. “But there has been a decrease in quality and we request the authorities to take it up. We are looking forward to improve trade relations between the two countries,” he said.

S. Srinivasan, president of the Chennai Fruit Commission Agents Association, said the visit of the Australian delegates was encouraging. “This market is one of the busiest and largest markets in the city, with about 3,000 shops. Of them, 850 are fruit shops. If they can bring in any kind of help from Australia that will encourage our business here and give us a boost,” he said.
