Greece: Good watermelon, apricot, peach and table grape exports
Watermelon, apricot, peach and table grape exports are good so far this year, according to the Association of Greek Fruits, Vegetables and Juice Exporting Companies (INCOFRUIT - HELLAS). Demand for watermelons continues to be reduced and the pace of exports will continue to dwindle in the coming weeks. Demand is reducing for peaches and nectarines in a context of oversupply and current prices are too low for the season due to an increase in the harvest volume (the weather conditions have led to the storage of large amounts of the fruit). The apricot campaign has virtually finished with low average prices for the producer. Meanwhile, the table grape production has developed normally, with good quality and a greater volume. Consumer prices have been lower than last year due to the continued availability of cheap imports from other countries.
According to data from the Directorate of Documentation and Statistics of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, Greece's fresh fruit and vegetable exports for the week between 3 and 11 August 2017 are as follows:
- Oranges: 288,073 tonnes, compared to 412,595 tonnes last year.
- Lemons: 4,008 tonnes, compared to 20,606 tonnes last year.
- Peaches: 88,450 tonnes, compared to 81,332 tonnes last year.
- Watermelons: 161,776 tonnes, compared to 163,453 tonnes last year.
- Nectarines: 37,711 tonnes, compared to 36,126 tonnes last year.
- Apricots: 20,156 tonnes, compared to 12,931 tonnes last year.
- Table grapes: 7,567 tonnes, compared to 9,347 tonnes last year.
