Melon over-supply after iceberg lettuce shortage

Murcia growers face heat after extreme rainfall

The high temperatures in spring and the very hot summer in Murcia have caused a melon tragedy. As a result of the heat, a large proportion of the production came all at once in July, which caused the supply to double. The market couldn't absorb it, with disastrous results.

The melons were sold last month for very low prices. The sizes also weren't always that great, with a lot of thick fruit and much less fruit in the middle sorting. The quality also wasn't all that great, so a considerable volume was destroyed.

What the impact will be on the longer term, the future will show, but it is clear that things aren't looking good for the growers in Murcia. Earlier this year nothing was made in leafy vegetables, such as iceberg lettuce, due to the extreme rainfall, now the melons are suffering from the heat, which will undoubtedly have consequences for the coming leafy vegetable season, although the situation will differ from grower to grower.
