Frank Ocampo, Hagé International:

“Scarce supply not yet resulting in high pineapple prices”

Although the availability — especially of larger sizes — of pineapple isn’t large after the natural flowering in Costa Rica, this hasn’t yet resulted in higher prices on the market. “I expected there would be more demand, but it’s quite hard to reach prices of 8 or 9 euro in day trade,” says Frank Ocampo from Hagé International.

“Demand isn’t wild yet, and there’s still quite a bit of old trade on the market, which is sold at ‘dump prices’ of about 7 euro. This lowers all prices. Hopefully, that old trade will be off the market this week,” Frank continues. “The availability in Costa Rica isn’t very large, so a price recovery is imminent, but we won’t see it yet this week.”

“It is expected that we’ll receive normal volumes again late August or early September. We can only hope the market has recovered by then, because if we can barely break even when we have shortages, I think the future will be bleak,” Frank says. He thinks it’s too easy to say the difficult market is caused by the summer holiday. “Last year we also had a holiday, and prices were higher than 10 euro during that period.”
