Nearly 40% of mangos in northern Mexico have been harvested

According to Daniel Luque Miranda, producers in the northern part of the state have recollected 35 to 40 percent of this season's mango harvest.

The representative of the producers of mango in the state said the mango was being harvested at a normal rate in the different production areas.

He also said that, so far, the area that was free of fruit flies had already produced 20 thousand tons of mango, which have been destined to supply the national and international markets.

The production obtained consists mainly of the short cycled Tommy Hayden and Ataulfo varieties and, at this moment, producers are already starting to harvest the Kent variety, which has an intermediate cycle, and will later finish the harvest with the Keitt variety, which was a late cycle.

Quality and health
Regarding the care of the production, Luque Miranda said that, compared to previous cycles and other production regions, they had achieved a great advance in quality, safety, and health in the fields, in the harvest, and in the post harvest; which improves the competitiveness of the producers of the northern areas.

However, he said, prices in the market continue to be low due to the high export volumes that the packers in the southern part of the state continue to send to the market. To improve the fruit's prices it is necessary to reduce shipments.

Mango production in the northern area is expected continue throughout the whole month of August, when it is also expected to peak.
