Peru to double Hass avocado exports to the United States

Peru expects to export about 225 thousand tons of Hass avocado in the current season (which ends at the beginning of September). This is 25% more than the 179 thousand tons it shipped in the previous season.

The president of the Association of Hass Avocado Producers from Peru (ProHass), Daniel Bustamante Canny, stated that this growth had been due to the entrance in production of new plantations, as well as the high demand of avocado by the United States.

The president of ProHass said that 60% of the avocado exported this season would be sent to Europe, as the volume exported to this markets had increased slightly, even though the price was similar to 2016.

He also said that 30% of Peruvian shipments, i.e. around 65 thousand tons, would be destined to the United States which means the country would double its avocado shipments to this market as in the previous year they shipped 32 thousand tons there.

Regarding Asia (mainly Japan and China), a market where Peru ships 5% of its avocado exports, there will be a 100% increase, from 5 thousand tons shipped in 2016 to 10 thousand tons this year.

Latin America accounts for the remaining 5% of Peruvian Hass avocado shipments, notably Chile, Costa Rica and Argentina. Exports to Chile have increased by about 20%, while exports to Argentina (which was just opened this campaign) were very small.
