Mexico: Puebla produces 32% more avocados

According to the Agricultural Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), Puebla increased its production of avocado, one of the most valued products in the domestic and international markets, by 32 percent in one year.

According to the 2016 Agricultural Food Atlas, the state ranked seventh in domestic production, as it produced 15,519 tons during the 2015 season.

Michoacan continues to be the leading state with a production of 1,283,313 tons, a figure that represented an annual increase of 5.2 percent. It is followed in second place, although by far, by Jalisco with 119,647 tons, +19.3 percent, and by the State of Mexico, with 89,040 tons, i.e. +37.1 percent.

National avocado production amounted to 1,644,226 tons, i.e. 8.1 percent more than in the previous year. Puebla contributed 0.9 percent of the national production, while the leading state contributed 78 percent.

According to this data, the country produces enough avocado to fill 82.2 million boxes of 20 kilograms each, which if put together would form a straight line of some 41,106 kilometers. Mexico's per capita avocado consumption stands at 5.4 kilograms per year.

Other states that stand out in production are Nayarit (39,149 tons), Morelos (29,548 tons), Guerrero (16,522 tons), Puebla (15,510 tons), Yucatan (10,770 tons), Chiapas (10,992 tons) and Oaxaca (7,134 tons), while the rest totaled 23,555 tons.

Foreign Trade
Mexico is the world leader in avocado production. It's export volume amounts to 1,467,837 tons. It is followed by the Dominican Republic with 387,456 tons. Worldwide production of avocado stood at 4.7 million tons.

"The high international acceptance of Mexican avocados allows us to generate a favorable annual trade balance for Mexico of 1.92 billion dollars. Mexico exports avocados to 34 countries, and the United States is its main market. Eight out of every 10 avocados exported are marketed in that nation."
