California fresh fig crop expected to be bigger than years past

According to the California Fresh Fig Growers Association, California's Fresh Fig season started in May and will continue through mid-January. This year’s first crop was plump and plentiful due to the rainy winter followed by a cool spring. Subsequent crops are expected to be just as beautiful and delicious.

“California's excellent climate combined with the sustainable practices of our dedicated fig farmers means we can all look forward to terrific fruit again this year,” says Karla Stockli, Chief Executive Office of the California Fresh Fig Growers Association. “As consumer demand for fresh figs continues to increase, the main crop is expected to be bigger and sweeter than ever. It should be an excellent year to enjoy California Fresh Figs.”

California produces 100% dried figs and 98% of fresh figs sold commercially in the United States. There are six primary varieties of California-grown figs:
  • Black Mission (dried/fresh). Purple and black skin with deep earthy flavor like a Cabernet. Available May – December
  • Calimyrna (dried/fresh). Pale yellow skin with a buttery and nutty flavor like a Chardonnay. Available July – September
  • Kadota (dried/fresh). Creamy amber skin with a light flavor like a Sauvignon Blanc. Available June – October
  • Brown Turkey (fresh). Light rple to black skin with robust flavor like a Pinot Noir. Available May – January
  • Sierras (dried/fresh). Light-colored skin with a fresh, sweet flavor like a Riesling. Available May – December
  • Tiger Figs (fresh). Relatively new variety. Light yellow color with unique dark green stripes and a bright red-purple interior fruit with fruity, raspberry, citrus flavor like a sparkling Rosé. Available July – November
