China: Lychees from Guangdong become best-sellers

Now that we are approaching the end of July, large volumes of lychees from the middle and late season are hitting the market slowly. However, lychees are not only hard to come by, but prices have also been continuously rising. Due to the impact of the weather, the cities of Guangzhou, Dongguan and Huizhou and others have suffered a substantial reduction in their lychee output, while these regions mainly produce lychees and small seeded lychees until they are late maturity.

High quality lychees like cassia tasting ones and the small seeded ones have high requirements in terms of air temperature. In the winter they only blossom in cold temperatures. Because the winter last year was too warm, the output of top quality lychees was estimated to be only half of the previous years. Due to the even cold temperatures at the end of last year, the output had increased a little, but only totaled up to 20 or 30% of previous years.
