Brazil: Chinese garlic to pay anti-dumping duty

The Brazilian government gave good news to the local garlic producers. The Chinese garlic that enters that country will have to pay an antidumping tariff, which will cause its price to increase to about US $20 per box, a little cheaper than the US $28 that a box of garlic from Mendoza costs, but much higher than the US $8 that it was worth before the tariff, according to data from Asocamen.

The measure was taken due to a lawsuit filed by Asocamen (the Association of Producers, Packers and Exporters of Garlic, Onions and Similar products from Mendoza), ProMendoza and Amapa (National Association of Garlic Producers of Brazil).

Guillermo San Martín, the manager of Asocamen, said that "the accumulation of evidence allowed the Brazilian technical agency to decide that all Chinese garlic entering Brazil, be it industrial or fresh, will have to pay an antidumping tariff. This benefits us because it ensures prices will be more stable."
