Draft bill could tighten laws on Australia's ag labour
The call comes as Rosie Ayliffe, mother of murdered backpacker Mia Ayliffe-Chung who was attacked in a backpacker hostel in Queensland in 2016, campaigns for greater oversight of labour hire companies, farmers and hostels.
The South Australian State Government has announced a draft bill to tighten laws around the labour hire industry. The bill will establish a licensing system, making it illegal for businesses to hire workers from an unlicensed company or contractor.
The state's Attorney-General John Rau said it was past time to act on the issue.
"These people are not only exploiting workers but they're also undercutting legitimate businesses that are doing the right thing, and it's about time something was done to make their lives difficult," he said.
