Strawberry prices drop by half

It is quiet on the Fruit and vegetable market at the moment. "The holiday period has started and the first weeks are always slow," says Jonathan Vandesande of the export company, Weiss. "What is happening now is pretty normal for this time of the year. There are not many price outliers."

Strawberry prices were high last week. "We even got EUR 10. Today prices are back to normal. They vary, but do not go above EUR 5. This means prices have dropped by a half within a week."

Higher field prices
He admits that the local production of greenhouse vegetables is high due the warm weather. "The field vegetables, however, suffered from the dry weather. There are some problems with quality. It will, apparently, improve shortly since it has started raining. It is striking that lettuces have become more expensive since some countries, like Germany and Switzerland, were affected by the dry weather. There is, therefore, sufficient demand for lettuce."
