"China: citrus greening disease may not be "incurable"

"Citrus greening disease is a destructive disease for orange production. So far, 19 provinces and regions have encountered this disease which has posed a great threat to the development of the citrus industry. After years of research and experiments on citrus plants, we may have found the microbiological fertilizer that can fight against the diseases," said Mr. Dehua Chen from Yantai Bojie Agriculture Technology Development.

Citrus greening disease in China
"Compared to the other countries, citrus greening disease is more common in China because more chemical fertilizers are used for citrus plants which are planted closely together. Also, growers use random types of pesticides to get rid of harmful insects. We therefore suggest that farmers better manage the growing process by combining disease prevention and control, replacing herbicides and chemicals like glyphosate with traditional or organic fertilizers and manual weeding. Also, farmers should stop destroying the trees by cutting off the branches whenever they found them infected with the disease."

E-2001 fertilizer

The fertilizer E-2001 from the U.S. is a new fertilizer made of a harmless organic microbial agent containing various beneficial and active microorganisms. The fertilizer is imported from the U.S. and has been available in China since 2003. Over the past few years, with the increasing awareness of quality fertilizers among growers, the sales of the product has been rising every year. Compared to 2016, the sales in 2017 went up by around 20% and the market price has remained stable."

Trials
"In Changan Village located in Fengkai County, Guangdong Province, we have two test sites for citrus greening disease, taking up an area of around 2 and 5.3 hectares separately. After years of experiments, we have found that E-2001 can treat the disease effectively. To share the result of E-2001 and provide a chance for people in the citrus industry to exchange ideas, we will organize an event with the theme of 'The integrated management of citrus greening disease' at the Gonggan Test Site on 29th of July. Experts, professionals and farmers in the industry will all be invited to the event to participate in the discussion."
