Egypt: Autumn grapes volume increases in line with international demand

In recent years there has been an increase in the demand for seedless grapes, which has caused many farmers of these varieties, such as the Autumn Royal, to increase the size of their plantations. "There was a time when there wasn't enough production in the market, so Egypt bet on this product," said Moataz Moharam, head of export at Smart Cairo.

This company has 1,000 to 1,200 tons of grapes per year, 50% of which they export to such diverse destinations as Singapore, Indonesia, Oman, Bahrain, Denmark, and Switzerland. However, there are places that have their own production with which they constantly compete at the international level, such as Australia, which also sends its grape production to Indonesia; and Chile, which sends them to Europe through Spain. "It's hard to compete because they have better packaging than we do," Moharam said. The price of these grapes of Egyptian origin currently ranges between 9 and 11 euro, the same value they had last year at this time.
