Paulien Becker, Yex:

"Pomegranates still unknown, but not unloved"

True to tradition, the sales of exotics are on a bit of a back burner during the summer holidays due to the wide supply of melon, stone and soft fruit. Yet the sales of pomegranate show a rising line across the board. "More and more consumers are discovering the seeds inside this red fruit," says product manager Paulien Becker of Yex. "But it is a product that needs explaining. Many consumers have no idea how to cut it and what pomegranate can used for."

Yex imports pomegranates from all corners, Peru, Israel, Argentina, Turkey, Spain, Chile, South Africa, India and the United States. "At the moment we are in the Peruvian season and there are some South African pomegranates on the market here and there. We will have Peruvian pomegranates available for the next week or two, after which I expect a small gap in week 29 and 30, after which we start the Israeli product," says Paulien.

"We had considerable demand in May and June, but in recent weeks the market has been quite full. The prices are under a bit of pressure at the moment with a level between 6.50 and 7 Euro, but I expect them to be twice as high at the start of the Israeli season. It's always exciting to see how quickly Turkey and Spain follow the Israeli season," says the product manager.

Yex sells the pomegranates both loose and as seeds. "The seeds in particular are popular. They are a real superfood, like avocados and dates. The applications are diverse. Pomegranates can be eaten alone and used for juices. They are also delicious in a (fruit) salad, creamy dessert or on ice cream. We provide the necessary explanation with our own brand - Discovered."

The peak in sales of pomegranates is around the holidays such as Christmas and Easter. "We sell most pomegranates in north west Europe. You also see large differences in the purchasing countries and customers. In one country the peel has to look good, but others select based purely on flavour. The variety Wonderful is still the most popular. It has a good flavour and is unparalleled in shelf life," concludes Paulien.
