FINKUM - Europe

Asia welcomes Turkish figs and cherries

Cherries and figs are two fruits that are not regularly consumed in most parts of the world. They are also fruits that are produced in only a handful of countries. Turkey is a country that is a leader in the production of both figs and cherries.

For FINKUM Europe, a company based in the Netherlands with their mother company in Turkey, it is easy to move produce from Turkey to Europe. According to FINKUM Europe, Commercial Director, Cem Varnatopu, “In Europe, we are able to export cherries to Austria and the UK for almost 4 euro per kilo. Our growth here is limited because countries such as Spain and Greece produce cherries at a lower price with good quality. Meanwhile in Asia, in countries such as HK, China, Malaysia and Singapore, we are able to sell our products for around 7 euro per kilo to importers, who then sell our cherries to the consumer for around 13 euro per kilo."

Varnatopu added that this year hasn’t been that good for the business of cherries for Finkum. “Summer started late which affected our production. We expected to export around 400 tons this season, but it looks like we will only do around 200 tons. It's a good thing that our produce this year has higher quality than our cherries last year, so we can expect a higher price for them."

Figs
Figs are a more specialized product, and the industry has less competition. Generally the figs are perceived as an expensive fruit for the rich people. The fruit is considered special because it is grown in very specific regions and it has very short seasons (June – October).

“Italy also produces figs, but Turkish figs have a better quality. Our green figs and black Bursa figs are in demand. Countries such as Germany, England, Switzerland, Austria, The Netherlands, Norway and Sweden are our clients. We’ve also been working with importers from Hong Kong and Singapore, where we hear the demand is growing.”

Typically, FINKUM is able to sell 1.5 kilo of figs for 10 euro to importers. At the moment, FINKUM is still busy with their green figs.

Given the momentum of FINKUM in opening up new markets and given its expertise on these specialized fruits, it is only a matter of time before figs and cherries hit supermarkets worldwide.
