Indian farmers warned of monsoon related diseases in spice crops

The scientists of Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) under the Indian Council for Agriculture Research (ICAR) have alerted spice farmers to be cautious in preventing monsoon related diseases in spice crops.

"After a harsh summer comes a strong south westerly monsoon which is gathering strength across the state and is posing a threat to spice farmers there," a news release said. An advisory issued by ICAR Indian Institute of Spices Research says that the incidence of serious diseases like foot rot of black pepper, rot disease of cardamom, soft rot of ginger and fruit rot and leaf fall in nutmeg are on the rise.

A heavy monsoon, though beneficial for crop growth, also provides conducive conditions for the spread of diseases in these spice crops, according to experts. Farmers are advised to closely monitor the fields for early detection of disease outbreaks and to follow recommended crop protection measures, the advisory said.
