Technical difficulties disrupt cargo exports at Indian airport

Technical glitches in the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) facility, which was launched at the Tiruchi airport on Saturday affected exports of cargo from the airport.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Customs authorities were jointly involved in establishing the facility, which was built to fulfill the needs of exporters.

Being the custodian of the international airport, the AAI had provided space, computer hardware, connectivity and other basic infrastructure required for introducing the facility, which would be manned by the Customs authorities.

However, many cargo consignments could not be exported due to “technical glitches,” airport sources told The Hindu.

Just about three tonnes of cargo was sent during the day against the normal 20 tonnes, the sources said. Perishables, especially vegetables, are mostly exported from the airport.
